Choosing what to wear can feel like the hardest part of getting ready for your session. This guide is here to make it simple. We’ll walk through colours, outfits and little details so you feel comfortable, confident and like yourself in front of the camera.
Start with one outfit
- Choose one person’s outfit first (often Mum or whoever feels most unsure).
- Build everyone else’s outfits around those colours and textures.
- Aim for 2–3 main colours with a mix of soft neutrals.
Colours & patterns
- Neutrals and earthy tones (cream, beige, soft browns, muted greens, dusty blues) photograph beautifully.
- Small, subtle patterns are fine; avoid big logos, cartoon prints and very bold patterns.
- Try not to match exactly – gentle variation looks more natural and relaxed.
Comfort & fit
- Choose clothes you can sit, walk and cuddle in easily.
- Avoid anything too tight, short or that you’re constantly adjusting.
- Layers (cardigans, jackets, knits) add interest and can be taken on and off.

Shoes & accessories
- Simple, clean shoes that suit the location (no bright runners if possible).
- Keep jewellery minimal so it doesn’t distract from your faces.
- Watches can date a photograph unless you’re happy with that look, so choose a classic style or skip a watch altogether.
- Empty pockets of phones, keys and bulky items before we start.
For kids & pets
- Dress kids in comfy clothes they can move and play in.
- Bring a spare layer or outfit for little ones, just in case.
- If your dog is joining, choose a simple collar/lead that doesn’t clash with your outfits.
